How much do wedding invitations cost?
How much do wedding invitations and wedding stationery cost in the UK?
Asking how much do wedding invitations cost is like asking that (really annoying) question ‘How long is a piece of string?
When you start to look at the options available for your wedding stationery, your mind will probably be well and truly blown! With so many choices effecting the price; which card, which finish, which style, it makes it really hard to know how much it will all cost.
However, this post will help clear the muddy water, and give you an understanding of how much you should spend on your wedding stationery. It is of course based on how we work, and our prices, but it should give you a general idea of what to budget for and expect to pay.
Before you start thinking about wedding stationery, set a wedding budget
Knowing what you intend to spend on your whole wedding day is very important!
It’s not the most exciting part of the process, but having at least a rough idea as to how much you have
in the purse is essential for making the more exciting decisions later.
How do I work out what my wedding stationery will cost?
Use the list below as a way of working out what wedding stationery you want.
Then at the bottom of the post, we show you how your choices effect the amount you need
to have available for your wedding stationery.
We also tell how much we recommend budgeting for your invitations and wedding stationery with
real ££ examples, showing you that your dream wedding stationery is definitely within reach!
1. Write your wedding guest list
First you need to get a handle on your guest numbers.
This will tell you how many invitations you will need, and then how many place cards, menus etc.
you’ll have to order for the wedding reception.
Top Tip: You only need one wedding invitation per household, not one per guest!
2. Choose the wedding stationery you need
This is the bit that may overwhelm you – but please don’t stress, we can always help with this!
There are a several things to consider, so I go into this in far more detail on another blog post.
You can also check out our handy guide to what wedding stationery you need.
But for the purpose of this article – simply put, the more things you want, the more you will spend.
3. Choose your style of wedding stationery
Again, maybe this strikes fear into you!?
Don’t panic, we have tried to make this as simple as possible.
Within each collection we offer different ‘styles’ of the stationery. These have different price points;
for example a ‘luxury ribbon tied’ invitation costs more than our flat card design,
due to the time it takes to hand finish the ribbon stationery.
We only print digitally (done by the professionals!) so you won’t get confused by different
printing methods and incur any extra costs.
This means that the ‘style’ of stationery you choose will affect your overall spend.
4. Add any luxury extras
You can finish your stationery with our optional ‘luxury extras’, such as wax seals and velum wraps with soft satin ribbons. Or maybe you could choose from our new range of gorgeous coloured envelopes.
These add a little more individuality to your wedding stationery, but do come at an additional cost.
Bearing this in mind, the finishes you choose will make a difference to your budget.
So If you are a stationery fanatic (like us), just make sure you have enough in your budget for these beautiful things.
So what is realistic budget for wedding stationery?
These examples and calculations are based on our 18 years of experience and industry knowledge.
We suggest setting aside 3 – 6% of your whole wedding budget for wedding stationery package.
For wedding invitations alone, we suggest an allowance of 1 – 3% of your wedding budget.
Let’s use an example of a simple wedding at a country hotel,
for 80 day guests with an additional 20 coming to the evening reception.
The overall budget is £17,300 (based the UK average from Hitched.co.uk)
Example 1
65 flat card invitations + information card
80 x Place cards | 9 x Table number cards | 1 x Table plan | 1 x A2 Welcome sign
approx. £550.00 = 3.2% of budget
Invitations alone approx. £276 = 1.6% of budget
Example 2
65 flat card invitations + information card + vellum wrap + wax seal
80 x Place cards | 80 x Personal menus | 9 x Table number cards | 1 x A1 Table plan | 1 x A2 Welcome sign
approx. £830.00 = 4.8% of budget
Invitations alone approx. £406 = 2.4% of budget
Example 3
65 flat card invitations + information card + rsvp card + vellum wrap + wax seal
1 x A1 Order of events sign | 80 x Place cards | 80 x Personal menus | 9 x Table number cards
1 x A1 Table plan | 1 x A1 Welcome sign
approx. £1023.00 = 5.9% of budget
Invitations alone approx. £503 = 2.9% of budget
As you can see the costs can vary from £550 – £1023 for the same number of guests.
